Elegant & Atmospheric Date Night at The Elder in Bath

If you are like us, you may be on the lookout for new restaurants that really feel like they can elevate the every day dining experience.

And with saying that, if you are local to Bath and that has already piqued your interest, you have to visit The Elder.

Seated in a series of elegant and atmospheric dining rooms, each portioned along the lines of the original Georgian houses they reside within, guests are welcomed as old friends. A sumptuous yet informal dining experience where guests are taken on a journey of discovery by the knowledgeable and passionate team. Everyone who visits The Elder leaves having learned something –whether it’s a story about the history of Bath, the local estates or how we prepare and cook the perfect venison.

We first visited The Elder for our second wedding anniversary, and it succeeded all of our expectations. So you could imagine our delight when we received an invitation to come back and dine there again for review.

I was first attracted to the interior decor and the lovely juxtaposition between the ingredients in many of their dishes. It all looked elegant, but not fussy.

From provenance to preparation, no part of the process is off-limits for The Elder. Once guests have dined with them, they are offered tours of the kitchen, wine cellars, and in-house butchery, to speak with the huntsman and the chefs about our field to plate philosophy.

Managing their own game on local estates offers the opportunity to take their guests out to visit these sites, enhancing their experience even further.

This is not something we have personally experienced; however, perhaps we will be treated to it on our third visit.

Sustainability is at the core of The Elder’s message; they go to incredible lengths to ensure all the meat, fish, and vegetables are grown or harvested humanely, carefully, and with care. Their wild food offering is unique in the UK - as land managers, we control wild deer herds on private estates and process the venison in their own FSA-regulated larder.

I have mentioned many times over on Instagram how I tend not to eat a lot of red meat here in the UK. Unfortunately, I think growing up in a place like Alberta, Canada, I have been spoiled for choice when it comes to Grade A, Alberta beef. And it’s been hard to get used to the taste of meat here in the UK.

However, on both of our visits to The Elder, I have been more than pleasantly surprised with the taste and quality of the meat!
